Ugly Betty

September 28th, 2006: The Pilot

So when I first heard of this show I was totally unsure if I would like it, then I saw the trailer for it and thought it looked awesome and I love America Ferrera but aside from the obvious, I wouldn't have known it was the same girl from Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.

But I knew I would have a hard time with a show whose premise is built around making fun of her. I've been made fun of in a similar fashion so I can relate but I don't think I could ever take the high road that she has.

I thought the show was good and you definitely fall in love with Betty and root for her. I did love her Scottish friend, played by Ashley Jensen, who was in a Brit Com that I watched called May to December. But I felt it was a bit cliche that the only friend Betty would make at Mode Magazine would be someone who wasn't a "model-type" and it was obvious when Betty left her idea behind that Christine (I think that's her name) would put it on Daniel's desk.

Overall the show was predictable and you could see that the photographer was in cahoots with Vanessa Williams and that the only guy to ever be interested in our Betty was someone like Walter.

I think it would have been more intersting if that front desk office person was her friend too but one thing I don't want to see is her and Daniel getting together because Daniel falls in love with her inner beauty, which Betty has plenty of.

America Ferrara sold this show and it gives a demented look at what magazine publishing is so I will keep on watching but if the taunts to Betty get too much for me, I might have to tune out.

Gilmore Girls

October 3rd, 2006: The land of Hello Kitty

So I had to include that little quip from Lorelai because I love Hello Kitty and totally agreed with her comment about Breakfast at Tiffany's. And the side-by-side posters of Chairman Mao and Sandra Oh, too funny.

And that was about the funniest thing in this episode. Again the new writers are trying too hard to regain the witty dialogue of the Palladinos and two episodes in a row without Emily and Richard Gilmore, not good.

The whole Lane thing was funny and loved how she said her mother was right about sex but let's hope she does try again and this time in a bed. But I knew that when Lane wasn't well that she was pregnant. The dialogue of horrible celebrity baby names was cute.

And I thought Luke was the baby brother of Liz and not the older one.

I suppose I can understand Rory's disappoint in Lorelai over the whole Christopher situation but I do hope that Luke and Lorelai find their way back to each other.

September 26th, 2006: Girls have lost gift of gab

Has the Gilmore Girls jumped the shark? I don't know. I have to see a few more shows without the Palladinos to make the judgement but you can tell the new show runners are trying their best to mimic the Palladinos style and dialogue.

I did feel that some of the rapid fire dialogue was a bit forced and that some of the situations were a little out there even for Stars Hollow but I still enjoyed the episode. Did love it when Kirk drove into Luke's but since when did Taylor become Town Selectman again, I thought that was Jackson's job -did I miss something.

Yes and Lorelai was quite blunt when she told Luke that she slept with Christopher but I am glad that she did instead of them getting back together and have him find out later in the season. I honestly was never really sold on Luke and Lorelai as a couple but somehow I couldn't help rooting for them to be together. If this is the GGs last season, I hope they get back together.

As for Rory's gift from Logan. Confused the heck out of me, even after it was explained. I don't quite get what it means that Logan wants her to visit at Christmas. I mean what's stopping her from just going in the summer anyways.

Next week, sorta of looks good so we will see if I will be sticking with GG has I have had over the last 6 seasons.

Cheers

Survivor: Cook Islands

September 28, 2006: The tribes merge

So the tribes merge and my Puka tribe got split up. So which team am I going to root for now? Since Yul is hot and my age and I like Becky, I am going for their tribe. It was a close vote and I was worried that Becky was going to go home but I thought it would have been interesting to see if Yul would keep his promise and give Becky the immunity idol should she have been in danger.

I thought it was interesting that they brought up Billy's comments to Candice and not suprisingly she said that she said no such thing to him and it wasn't love at first sight for her, he just mis-interepreted what she said to him.

One thing that did bother me about this episode was the repeating of the challenge. I mean it was the exact same one that was on Palau but for some reason it was better there than here. Come on Survivor, you can some up with original challenges since this isn't an All-Star version where it is more likely you would see old challenges re-visited.

If Aitu loses again, I would get rid of Flicka, she is so wishy-washy that she has to go. We've seen what happens to those that are indecisive in the game, hello Christy and Dolly!!! Over at the other tribe, anyone can go as long as it isn't Brad or Jenny. It seems interesting that so far only people from the visible minority groups have left the game.

And Parvati, you are a horrible flirt, it's so obvious what you are doing that it's almost funny. I think you need to go for being a bad flirt.

Until next week.

September 21, 2006: Throwing a challenges is bad

Second episode in and I've already fallen into the trap that the Survivor producers wanted us to fall into: cheering for your ethnic team.

When I watched the first episode last week, I found myself cheering for Puka, the Asian tribe. I knew that going in I would. One of my complaints about television has always been that visible minority doesn't necessarily only mean African American. So when Survivor announced that they were segregating along racial lines, at first I thought it was controversial because I thought it was caucasion vs the visible minorities but when I saw that wasn't the case, I thought that was good. I think this is the most diverse cast of any television show out there.

I mean sure there are some people on Puka that annoy me like Cao Boi but in his defence I think he does bring some wisdom to his tribe especially he can heal people, a huge asset. Can you imagine the other tribes who have headaches and no Cao Boi could they be able to concentrate on challenges? Plus the two other guys on Puka are pretty hot and the girls are cute.

As for Arti throwing that challenge. Stupid. I think it was so obvious that everyone knew what they were doing. Poor Billy, I mean he had to go, it was so obvious by the editing but there could've been a better way to oust him.

And over on Exile Island, how thrilled am I that Yul found the idol!!!! If he uses it smartly, as did Terry from last season, and Puka continues on being a strong tribe, I think he can go far.

Anyways, until next week.

Grey's Anatomy

September 28, 2006: Muffins and underpants

There is one thing that Izzy Stevens and I have in common, aside from the fact that we are both ridicously hot, is that we are both aweome bakers but I don't necessarily bake when I am depressed but I think that is a better way to channel your energy than eating muffins, like our Addison.

And why did I now know that McSteamy would be coming out of Addison's bathroom? But McDreamy shouldn't care since he said his marriage is over and is dating Meredith, who wants to date both him and Finn, the adorable Chris O'Donnell. If it were me I would choose Finn over McDreamy. It's almost like who should Felicity choose: Ben or Noel? For me personally, I would want Noel for myself but Ben for Felicity. In this case, I don't really care who Meredith picks as it seems obvious it would be Derek since Chris O'Donnell isn't a full-time cast member.

Now onto my hands-down favourite character on Grey's and that is Callie. I love her, I think she rocks and dug her whole panty/jealousy thing with George. They are such a great couple and love Meredith's advice to George, I don't remember the exact quote but I am in agreement with it.

And a word of advice to ABC: Stop extending Grey's to beyond 10pm, I thought I gave my VCR plenty of time by taping one minute past but that still wasn't enough.

Looking forward to next week

September 21. 2006: After a long summer.....

Hey folks, I am going to start off this blog with a little rant on how I need to get a PVR. VCRs are so passe yet I still use one because PVRs are too expensive. The reason why I needed to say this is because last night I set-up my VCR to tape the third season premiere of Grey's Anatomy, my tape cut out somewhere between the last 10 minutes and the last five minutes. The only reason I can't narrow it down is because I managed to notice a tape sticking out of my VCR and I am immediately stuck in another. Anyways, I've seen most of the episode. I think where the tape got cut off is when it broke for commercials at the point where Miranda was trying to conform the man who lost his wife to the plague and the moment I got when I popped in the new tape was when Callie came rushing to George after being released from quarantine.

I actually wouldn't have cared about the whole tape thing because I would have timed shifted the episode on CTV but I noticed that it was the second episode of the season they were showing and not seeing the first I didn't watch it.

Ok now onto the episode. It was good, of course did we expect a resolution to Meredith's whole McDreamy and McVet dilema, of course not, don't be silly. They are going to drag this out as long as Chris O'Donnell is on the show. My personal pick, hard to say, they are both so darn hot. But I guess McVet because he isn't married.

And who knew that Koreans could be Jewish too! That Sandra Oh, she's great. Loved her line when Meredith told her that she slept with McDreamy at the prom and said something along the lines of McGuilt.

The little flashbacks were good and you know I am not giving too much space to Izzy, while I feel bad for her that she lost Denny, I just couldn't stand her during the whole thing because she wasn't be rational and she did so many wrongs to get what she wanted but still ended up broken-hearted.

Also, I felt bad for the husband who lost his wife to the plague, there were some great scenes for Chandra Wilson. And I think the Chief should either retire or cut back his hours, I mean he had an affair, which is wife secretly knew about and she sacrified her life waiting and forgiving this man and what does he do when she requests him to retire, nothing!!! He loses a good woman and we as viewers will lose Lorretta Devine.

Because I love George and Callie together, I loved the scene when he and Derek were quarantined and how George hopes he doesn't die before he can tell Callie he loves her. And Derek said does he, he said he loves her soonish. McDreamy advised that he should tell her regardless if it is soonish.

So when Callie rushed over after the quarantine was over and professed her love all over again and Derek gave that look to George to tell her. I was a little miffed that George didn't but I guess all in good time considering this is episode one of season 3.

The Reel Deal

Attention movie fans!!!!! I am here to help you answer any burning movie questions that you have.

What makes me qualified? Well, I am a huge movie fan but aside from that, I have a gift where I can name any movie with as little or as much information that you give me, either based on stars alone or basic plot line.

So if there ever was a movie title that you've been dying to know or you just want to try and stump me then post them here and I will answer them for you.

Dancing with the Stars

September 20th, 2006: Farewell Miss USA

So I am a little late with this but I wanted to see the results show before I commented. When this show premiered last summer, I resisted watching it. I pretty much reserved my reality TV quotient to The Amazing Race and Survivor. The Apprentice was on the list but then it become boring and the same old same old. But, I digress. With Dancing, I found myself intrigued with well the dancing. One of my favourite movies is Strictly Ballroom so it is no wonder why I like this show.

When the second season came, I pretty much avoided it too but not Season 3. I can't deny it anymore, I like Dancing with the Stars.

There now that's over with. let's get to this week's show. I am not a dancer and probably never will be since I am the most uncoordinated person that I know. So I can't really judge what was good or not. What I can say is that Shanna's and Sara's mambo's were painfully slow. So I am not sad to see Shanna go home last night. Vivica's was good but a little slow. That Monique girl and Willa were smokin' fast and their mambo's were hot, especially Monique's but I find it slightly creepy that as a teen she had great chemistry with her much older partner.

I personally didn't see anything wrong with Mario's quick step but i guess there was something wrong to it. And at first I didn't like Joey's quick step but upon further review, it was good. As for who I am pulling for, I like Harry and Ashley only because I think Ashley deserves to go far after the whole Master P fiasco I saw briefly last season. The other team I am rooting for is Emmitt and Cheryl.

Before I forgot, I think fans should send Jerry Springer home. I think he's ok but not great and he seems to be begging fans to kick him off.

And that Tucker Carlson skit last night, thought it was great but it was probaly the journalist in me that enjoyed it. I think they should do that everyweek.

Until next week!!! Cheers!

How I Met your Mother

September 25th, 2006: Lily's summer in San Fran

So Lily is back in NYC!!! Yeah, I did miss her and I really thought in the end that Marshall and Lily would get back together but considering this is the second episode of the season I knew they would drag out there separation for awhile. But I did love when Lily walked into the bar and threw the martini in Barney's face and said "You gave my twin sister chlymedia"

And I thought Barney was being a real jerk this episode to Marshall that I really wanted to choke him like Marshall did after Barney pocketed the girl's phone number. But cool magic tricks.

I loved the still drunk Robin the morning after and loved the Canadian reference to her again but it just didn't jive with her gun craziness last week. Oh well.

Until next week.

September 18th, 2006: The Worst summer

The one new comedy show that I watched last season is back for its sophmore season. Nice nod at the beginning with kids feeling like the Dad has been telling the story for a year!!!!

So the season opener picked up right were the finale left with Robin and Ted together as a couple and as the summer progressed more ickily so (well at least to Barney) to me it was cute.

And Marshall in a depression over Lily. The ID theft twist was cool.

Line of the night as always goes to Barney and I think it went something like this "Our mind can only hold a certain number of boob images, Bpegs!" LOL.

On another note, I thought Robin was Canadian since she didn't celebrate the US Thanksgiving, so was surprised that she was a gun enthusiast. But I guess, it really doesn't matter what nationality you are. But did like the look of glee on both her and Marshall's faces at the target range.

Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip

October 1st, 2006: Focus groups: The Good, Bad and the ugly

So I didn't do a post of last week's episode. My bad. Anyways, here is my take on this week's show. I still enjoy the snappy dialogue and love the behind-the-scenes look at a sketch show. I like that guy's impression of Tom Cruise/Ben Stiller/Nicholas Cage spot on as was Harry's Holly Hunter. Freaky.

While, I didn't really laugh at any of the supposed sketches, at least what we see of them, but I don't that is the point. It is the development of the sketches is what interests me.

As for the FG. It was good for Gina as she performed her sketch despite some lack of faith in herself and it helped Matt take risks in his writing. The Bad, Gina worrying about how no one likes her because the sketch bomb and the Ugly when Matt realized that Danny set him up to do better by posing the Anti-American question in the FG.

I don't know if I will continue with this Pop watch. If there is an episode that screams to write something about, I will.

Cheers,

September 17th, 2006: Pilot

If you are lucky to live in Canada, then you get to see this new show from Aaron Sorkin, he of The West Wing and Sports Night, a day earlier than our neighbours to the South.

Now I've never really seen a full episode of The West Wing because I am not very politically inclined but I did enyo Sorkin's script to the American President. Then again, I didn't like the movie for its political theme but more for the love story.

Anyways, this new show Studio 60, about behind-the-scenes look at a Saturday Night Live typse show intrigued me because not only do I love things all entertainment but it also starred good ol' Canadian boy Matthew Perry. I wanted to see this show that lured Mr. Perry back to TV after the long-run of Friends.

After watching the pilot, the dialogue is very sharp and heard that it's similar to the kind of dialogue that was on The West Wing. I really enjoyed the behind-the-scenes stuff and the Network type meltdown of Judd Hirsh. And how cannot I not forget the dig to my hometown of Vancouver. "Vancouver doesn't even look like Vancouver" said Danny (Bradley Whitford)

Matthew Perry was also good. Definitely shedding Chandler Bing and showing none of his nuances that make me view his Matt character not as Chandler, which has befelled many of Friends stars in other roles.

Has this show got me hooked? Not yet, I'll watch next week to see if I want to keep tuning in.

The Amazing Race 10 -September 17th, 2006

A new season with new surprises

Another season of the Amazing Race has begun and I am so excited. It is my favourite TV show on right now and I love it so much. And I was so stoked to see the Race start in Seattle, a city so close to my hometown of Richmond, BC. AND the fact that the first destination is Beijing, China (my motherland -unlike the HOT looking Korean brothers -I lol when I heard that comment). I like the fact, like Survivor, this is a very diverse race this season.

Usually when I do my Amazing Race Rant with some friends and family, I always view it as what would my partner (which would be my younger brother) and I would do.

So the roadblock. In past seasons, my brother and I agreed that I would always do the eating challenges because a) I like to eat and b) the fact that I've been on a diet so long that I would be starving. Anyways, eating fish eyes, yes not uncommon in my culture and my father eats them all the tims. I haven't personally done it but if he can do it so can I, plus not many of the teams looked disgusted at the prospect of eating them unlike the grasshoppers in AR 9 that BJ and Tyler had to eat to get the fast forward. The only problems most teams had was just using the chopsticks.

Phil said at the beginning of the race that there would be surprises in the race and the first one came tonight. When one of the teams mentioned that a person might get eliminated at the Forbidden City even though it wasn't a pit stop, I had a feeling that it was the first surprise. I think its a good thing as it creates a sense of urgency all the time and not take anything for granted. When I saw who could have been potentially have been eliminated, I didn't want any of the teams to go. So it was sad that it was friends Bilal and Sa'eed. They seemed like good guys. But at least it wasn't the hot brothers. Makes me wonder what the other surprises are in the race.

The detour: Labour or Leisure? Labour for sure. My brother knows it and I know it that I am the most uncoordinated person in the world. Plus when Phil was describing the detour and how we have to follow a pattern, I noticed right off the bat that there was a grey/black border before the clay coloured can be put in. So it pays to be an observant person!!!!

The race to the pit stop. No longer about a foot race which is an interesting twist as some of the teams who arrived at the wall didn't necesarrily mean that is how they are going to finish. Liked this fact.

Also loved how the teams attempted to speak Mandarin.

Let's breakdown the teams and its performance so far from last to first:

Bilal and Sa'eed: Getting eliminated at the mid-point of leg one is no fun at all. I think it always comes down to luck and they got a slow cab driver who also didn't know where he was going.

Vital and Arti: These two are a cute couple. It sucks that they came in last. But I did like Vital's tip on how to climb the wall better.

The coalminer and his wife (sounds like lyrics to a TV show theme song): Dave sounded like Cletis from the Simpsons. Hey that's what I thought when I heard him. I think the fact that they might not be as physcially fit might be their downfall later on in the race.

The single mothers: Did like that they pushed their way through the Great Wall challenge.

Tom and Terry: Thought it was a poor choice to do Leisyre but it didn't hurt them in the end.

Edwin and Goodwin (the hot Asian brothers): Aside from being hot, yes I have a crush on them, I think they are a fun team, I like that they had water guns but it was too bad that it was taken away from them at the airport (but I understand why). I think they have to be careful not to take things for granted and they might go far.

The Cheerleaders: I thought it would be a mistake to chose Leisure but they seemed to have performed it well.

Rob and Kimberly: There always have to be one team, usually a couple that always bickers and Rob and Kimberly are AR10's. Their constant bickering could be their downfall.

The Miss Americas: Performed well and looks like romance in the air with the models.

Peter and Sarah (woman with prosthetic leg): Too competitve and a bit cocky on Peter's side and a bit bossy.

Duke and Lauren (father/daughter): They are a strong team. They seem to work well together but can butt heads at times (but who doesn't with a parental unit). Love the fact that one of the teams thought they were either siblings or dating.

The models: I do love their backstory on how they overcame drug addiction but I have never really liked the "acting/model" teams, can't say why but they look strong too.

Well until next week....which as always looks good. And please post your own comments so we can have a good ARR going. Cheers!!!!!
